706: The Second Slap plus Leah Libresco Sargeant

We’ve all heard the stories of people raised within American evangelicalism who became disillusioned because of abuse, scandals, or political idolatry. Some migrated to more progressive church traditions while others deconstructed their faith entirely. Joshua Harris, made famous for his seminal purity culture book “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” was in the latter category. Harris now says he is emerging from “a season of overcorrection,” having seen the “bully energy” in progressive spaces, and that he is curious about Jesus again. Then, Kaitlyn talks to feminist author Leah Libresco Sargeant about her provocative new book, “The Dignity of Dependence.” Also this week—new signs of hope as cities, states, and courts are resisting ICE.

Something I learned in science research is appropo here. We would sit around after the day and laugh about research gone wrong. The answer was always the same and I apply it now to everything: Remember: if human beings are involved it will go bad. The more humans there are, the faster and deeper it will tank! And, yes, we we talking about ourselves, too.

I like your take on deconstruction. I’ve written about it just a bit but with more than a touch of confusion. I’ve deconstructed a dozen times,

I say…maybe a hundred times. But as an old guy, I meant what we all used to mean: let’s get ‘back to Jesus.Faith is always a tug of…

What I have noticed over the years that both Liberal and Conservative churches/denominations can be incredibly Machiavellian in BOTH their general politics and church politics.

The current issue with U.S. White Evangelicals is their unbridled support of a guy who spews abuse on a daily basis. Though no surprise, Richard Nixon was one of the most corrupt U.S. presidents and the largest supporter was Billy Graham.

On the progressive side I look at the PCUSA (Presbyterian) denomination which has collapsed and has gone from 6 million in the 60's to 800K, and they are on life support as the remaining congregations are aging out. The current church leadership should be challenged... I am sure Kailyn will not do it.... ju…

I don't know exactly what to make of Josh Harris. Of course I hope he ultimately has faith in Jesus. But given his behavior over the last... 30 years.. it kinda feels more like a bid to be relevant again. He tried to sell people exvangelical courses and backed off it when there was backlash. So how can he have a platform? Well, maybe it's time for another pivot. My most charitible read of this situation was actually be the opposite of Skye's - I don't think it's great that he's working this all out publically. He doesn't need an audience for this. Too often, I see people change their world view and they immediatly position themselves as experts or influencer…

Kaitlyn right around minute 36: "I have told students I had that left evangelical churches.....If you’re gonna do that great, don’t obsesses still over whatever the evangelical church is doing, it’s rotting your soul to be so critical constantly of a group you claim to have left behind." In the meantime, just about every show you put out constantly critiques white evangelicals.

Possibly because the "evangelical" church is so often so rock-ribbed certain of its perspectives? Asking for an Episcopalian friend :) And if you listen again to Kaitlin's closing remarks I think she'll explain what I'm trying to say. Meanwhile, thank you for the nice long list.
