705: Minnesota, Civil Rights, & Contagious Courage with Justin Giboney

The country is on edge after another protester was killed by ICE officers in Minneapolis. Phil, Kaitlyn, and Skye look at how different Christian journalists and media outlets are covering, or not covering, the story, and what protests against ICE share in common with the Civil Rights movement, and how they’re different. Speaking of the Civil Rights era, Justin Giboney is back to discuss his new book, “Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around.” He believes too much of the American church and our politics has been captivated by the culture war, and learning from the example of the Black church, which rejected the “conservative vs. progressive” binary, can help lead us out. Also this week, the cows are coming for us!

I take issue with Skye’s position in the interview that today’s liberals supposedly want to tear down the white race and/or anyone who opposes our point of view. That is a serious misrepresentation of the liberal point of view, and particularly of the point of view of liberal Christians. We have a saying in left-leaning circles, “when you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”

Right-wing Christians (and non-Christians) may feel like they’re being pushed down, when they’re just seeing other people being given access to a level playing field. I would also argue that part of why the average right-winger feels like they’re being dragged down is because the right-wing media environment constantly tells them that they’re being dragged…

Also, I am in no way implying that the left is without sin, or un-critiqueable (is that even a word?). But I am still calling you out on your constant disrespect for your fellow Christians who feel that our faith calls us to take stances currently regarded as “progressive.”

First time listener. Your show would have a lot more credibility if you had someone on it to present a different viewpoint. All three of you are confirming each other's biases.
