694: Why Don’t We Take Church Unity Seriously? with N.T. Wright

Why Don't We Take Church Unity Seriously with N T Wright

A new survey finds that moderately religious Americans are the most likely to say that they see dead people. Which raises a question—why are the non-religious and the very religious less likely to report encounters with the departed? New York Times columnist Ezra Klein says that by over-emphasizing inclusivity, the Democratic Party has ironically become less inclusive. And Ryan Burge looks at the numbers behind the party’s growing “God problem.” Will the Democrats ever figure out how to compete against MAGA? New Testament scholar N.T. Wright is back to discuss his latest book, “The Vision of Ephesians.” He tells Skye that the modern church has overemphasized the gospel importance of going to heaven and underemphasized the gospel importance of church unity. Also this week—Phil digs his hole with fans of Wicked even deeper.

As for people being visited by the dead (or just running into them, say in a haunting, rather than visits by dead loved ones), lots of people don’t talk about things that might get them funny looks or worse. And of course there are experiences with the canonized saints as well in Catholic beliefs…

I'm getting a bit frustrated with the "We've been getting it completely wrong with focusing on going to Heaven, it's all about building God's Kingdom on Earth" dichotomy that keeps coming up on the show. It's more the binary approach (and, er, I see this with Skye a lot in other issues--see below) that bothers me. "Going to Heaven" is, in my view, a genuinely good thing to be desired (yes, of course it leads to the New Heaven and New Earth, which I thought was the common understanding, and absolutely to the Beatific Vision)--just because other things have not been emphasized (in certain quarters) does not mean that that is not an important part of it. (I was als…

Wicked doesn't turn morality on its head. It shows a different world than the Wizard of Oz, but right and wrong are still depicted as the same right and wrong we've always had. Please give it an honest chance, at least the musical version. It's kind of like the Mirror Universe from Star Trek--if there was a series showing a resistance against the Terran Empire, but with the evil Kirk and stuff, it would not mean that morality was turned on its head--just different versions of the characters we're used to.
