693: Holy post Live from Chicago 2025

This week is Halloween, and on this special episode recorded with a live audience, the Holy Post hosts discuss why our culture isn’t afraid of monsters and demons anymore. How did all of our pop culture heroes and villains become morally ambiguous? Also, would communal living solve our loneliness epidemic? Kaitlyn is all for it, but Skye isn’t so sure. Also this week—audience Q&A, Phil, Skye, Kaitlyn, and Esau play a game of true confessions, and Phil’s favorite news segment comes full circle.

I want to say thank you to Phil for the moment of real vulnerability in his answer about following God's leading vs his own (good!) dreams of becoming the next Walt D. It truly felt like a holy moment! I've been wrestling with a lot of frustration lately and I think it has to do with a number of unmet goals and dreams that I've been holding onto too tightly. I'm inspired to release my grip on my dreams, start my own bubble journal, and rest in the knowledge that God will show me where he wants me to go (or stay!) Thank you Phil!

I normally enjoy each episode of Holy Post, but this episode was an exception.

I really do not follow Harry Potter and related genre. However, I was was watching a specific film of Harry Potter and I remember they were teaching necromancy to the kids at Hogwarts. Needless to say I stopped watching. Sorry but that is wrong.

Hey, go down the street to the Barnes and Noble in Oakbrook. Go to the upper level, and you will find in the Youth section nothing but books on wizardry, witchcraft etc. etc.

Per the Pew Research Group only 4% of Americans now hold to a biblical worldview. While at the same time it is stated that the U.S. population is 20%…

Hi, I actually teach a college course on the history of magic. "Necromancy" originally means divination (knowledge-seeking magic, like fortune-telling) by means of the dead - summoning up a ghost to ask it questions. That's what Saul does with the Witch of Endor in 1 Samuel 28. There are parallels in pagan literature, like Erichtho in the Pharsalia and when Odysseus goes to the entry of Hades in the Odyssey to find out how to get home. In the 4th century, the Christian theologian Augustine argued that all pagan gods and spirits were really demons in disguise. The Bible doesn't actually teach that, but it's the conclusion he drew. By that interpretation, if you called up the spirit…

Loved the episode, and really appreciated Skye's perspective on Halloween and Satanic Panic type stuff. If you look at what Satan actually DOES in the Bible, like in Luke 4, it's clear that the work of Satan in modern society isn't girls with black lipstick wearing pentagram earrings; it's nice men in suits telling Christians they need to seize political power. James 3 says the spirit of boasting comes from Satan; who's the most boastful public figure you can think of? My other thought was on News of the Butt. Sorry, but Kaitlyn doesn't need to lighten up; what she needs to be self-aware of the temptation to pharisaism. This has a history. In the 17th century, after a…

Re demons being fallen angels, and Skye saying that he's not sure about this because it's tradition, er... so are most of the main doctrines of Christianity (as the particular interpretations of Scripture are themselves something not just found in Scripture (as we have seen from the host of heresies going all the way back which claim to be founded in interpretations of Scripture)), doctrines like how we view the divinity of Christ, the nature of the Trinity, and even things like the canon of Scripture itself--or even how we look at Scripture.
