A court has ruled that a Christian-owned business is not required to pay for health insurance that includes drugs to prevent HIV. Is the ruling a victory for religious liberty, or a case of Christians unfairly imposing their beliefs on others? In an effort to “bring God back into public schools" Taxes now requires schools to display “In God We Trust” signs. But what happens when the sign is in Arabic? Southern governors are shipping undocumented immigrants North. But is their goal to actually solve the immigration crisis, or are they using vulnerable people for a partisan stunt?
Then, pastor and culture-watcher Mark Sayers is back to talk about his new book, “A Non-Anxious Presence.” He says we’ve entered a new cultural era riddled with anxiety and uncertainty that Christian leaders relying on the previous era’s models are not equipped to handle. Drawing from Friedman’s family-systems theory, Sayers argues we must learn to patiently resist the unhealthy people in our communities, endure sabotage, and fundamentally rethink our definitions of success. Plus, annual awards for hilarious scientific achievements.

Pretty disappointed in the immigration discussion, which seemed to mostly be throwing stones rather than considering policy and actions from a Christian world view. Skye, why criticize 17 GOP senators for opposing the Trump supported immigration reform, as if more Dem senators couldn't have voted aye. And other than the Trump admin, the only real run at reform was George W. Bush, and he worked hard at it although unsuccessful. The Obama admin didn't address immigration reform even with a super majority in congress. Neither has Biden. Their short term executive orders might feel compassionate, but they have led to millions of immigrants arriving in the shadows - not compassionate. Is criticizing Republicans now just reflexive on the Holy Post?
Not paying for preventative HIV treatment makes me so sad. Evangelical Christians are the self-proclaimed advocates of unborn babies, but mothers with HIV can pass HIV to their infants. The HIV preventative therapy that some Christian groups find theologically or ethically offensive ironically protects unborn babies from a deadly disease. Similarly the HPV vaccine prevents babies from a potentially deadly infection of papillomatosis. I cared for this sweet little baby boy with papillomas in his throat from his mother’s HPV. He would come into the hospital every month struggling to breathe.
Many professing Christians today seem to forget that "Fear not" is a command. Notice the contrast between the disciples at the time of the crucifixion (hiding in fear) and boldly spreading the gospel, healing, and facing persecution after the coming of The Holy Spirit. It's a testimony to the power of a Spirit-filled life submitted to God by following Jesus and His example. Every time a Christian is anxious (I'm talking about non-medical anxiety, medical anxiety is a biological illness and a different situation entirely) they're demonstrating at least a misunderstanding of what they claim they believe or they're revealing that they don't really believe it. Jesus commanded us to weigh the cost before following Him. He told …
Skye, you seem surprised that Republican Senators in 2018 (and the GOP going back into the 90s) blocked comprehensive immigration reform. But it's not that hard to see why if you look at the dynamic of the party's split incentives.
The GOP needs two things to win elections: Money and votes. These come from two different groups with wildly diverging interests. How to square this circle of pleasing billionaires consistently in order to keep the campaign funds coming in, while at the same time convincing voters to vote for billionaire-pleasing laws that are net harmful to those voters?
The main tool (in addition to flat out lying) is to use fear. True immigration reform that actually works necessarily results in…
