During a recent Fox News interview, Vice President J.D. Vance cited “an old school and very Christian concept” to justify rejecting refugees and ending international aid. Bishops from his own church disagreed. The Holy Post crew explores the concept Vance was citing, how he misunderstands it, and why his interpretation undermines the entire New Testament. Kaitlyn interviews Skye about his new book, “What If Jesus Was Serious About Justice?” They talk about the link between justice and worship, what it means to have a heart “far from God,” and why the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement is biblical but taught in a proudly unbiblical way in many churches. Also this week, Phil returns to Twitter and learns who Margaret is.

If you have not encountered the book, Between God and Satan, by Helmut Thielicke, it is worth a look. Thielicke was part of the Confessing Church in Germany. He wrote the book in 1938. The book is an extended meditation on the temptation of Jesus. The book sometimes comes to mind when I hear contemporary discussions of Christian Nationalism. Parts of it make me think that those things to which Jesus said no, are the things to which Christian Nationalists say yes. There is a Screwtape Letter qualtiy to Thielicke's method.
Thanks for your thoughtful critique of J.D. Vance's recent claim that Christians are meant to prioritize love of foreigner last of all. I attend a Quaker church, and during this past Sunday's time of open worship--a time when anyone can share a message they feel God has laid on their heart--I felt compelled to address Vance's claim. Like you, I pointed out that Jesus actually flipped that order upside-down, telling us that he'll one day judge our claims of loving all people by assessing how well we love those who are not normally the recipients of love. Those whom the world ranks last: the hungry and thirty, sick and imprisoned, widow and orphan, immigrant and foreigner, and above all, our…
