David French says there are two kinds of churches: love-your-neighbor churches and fear-the-world churches. Using these categories, Skye Jethani and David French look at two stories in the news. First, a controversial article about the crucifixion in Christianity Today has some people losing their minds, but does it really justify the outrage? And the legacy of Pope Francis is seen very differently by those who believe the church must defend itself against the threats of secularism, and those who think the church needs to extend more mercy to those on the margins. They also look at recent rulings by the Supreme Court against the Trump administration, and why a real Constitutional crisis is becoming more likely than ever.

Yet another way evangelical seminaries have failed us is by over-glamorizing the Protestant Reformation. The result is Simple Simon (a person who can't handle any nuance or complexity) got the message that protesting ITSELF is righteousness. They don't have it in them to take each issue, weigh it in the light of scripture, when necessary voicing their view, and letting other people be what they think of as wrong.
