660: Following Christ in “Negative World” and Charlie Peacock

With declining church attendance and shifting values, there’s no denying that our culture’s posture toward Christianity has changed. Some say America is now “post-Christian,” but author Aaron Renn believes it is downright “anti-Christian.” In a recent NY Times profile, Renn explains why he thinks Christianity now occupies a “negative world,” and why the winsome approach of leaders like Tim Keller should be abandoned for more aggressive tactics. Then, Phil talks with legendary musician, songwriter, and producer Charlie Peacock about his new memoir, “Roots in Rhythm: A Life in Music.” Also this week, a leaked memo reveals the real impact of Trump’s foreign aid cuts and immigration policy, and what exhibits would you add to the Museum of Failure?

Skye beautifully demonstrated why there is an “anti-some-Christian” sentiment in this country. I am a Christian, but I am anti-the-type-of-Christian that profess their love of Jesus, say they are following His example, see the suffering in this world, and then say “yeah, but why do they all have to come here?”

First, that’s a ridiculous statement, not all refugees come to the US, not even close.

Second, and more importantly, could you imagine a scenario where Jesus would say that? “Someone should help and care for those people, but it should be someone else.” No, that’s definitely not WWJD.

As for sexual ethics, when we get to the pearly gates, the question asked of us will be “how did you…

Forgot to mention Skye's talking about Evangelicals only having "Crotch" ethics.

I remember as a kid when Divorce and Remarriage was a BIG thing in the evangelical church.

Also when a women was having a child out of wedlock... back then an unmarried women would have to go live with their their Aunt in Fargo North Dakota to get over the social shame.

Other than not being transgender and not having an abortion, I am not certain what is left in the Evangelical sexual ethic philosophy....

Things sure have changed.....

USAID was feeding 70 million people per year. I have learned that Trump/Musk/Republicans/Evangelicals have cut 85% of all contracts.

With regards to the Education Department, school districts K-12 receive on average 12% of their budget from the Federal government. Poorer districts with their Special ED and support programs will be cut big time.

Since 85% of U.S. White Evangelicals voted for Trump ......all I can say is.....that White Evangelicals are totally responsible for all for the harm that is happening.

I'm listening to your conversation around social and sexual ethics - how the left has abandoned Christian sexual ethics and the right has abandoned Christian social ethics. Here's why I think that is.

I know, being someone on the left, that our sexual ethics changed because our social ethics - built on Exodus 34:6-7 and Jesus' love commands and the freedom of the Gospel - led us to recognize the strict Christian sexual ethics were harming our neighbor rather than leading to abundant life. Our strong Christian social ethics lead us to embrace a different sexual ethic because the sexual ethic we had was death-dealing and not life-giving.

Christians on the right have seen that, and I think the reason…

I want to add on that there's a difference in clarity in Scripture around the social ethics and the sexual ethics.

The social ethics seem really clear, at least on their base. They are repeated as central to God's identity (there's hundreds of verses about mercy, for example) and Jesus emulates them (we technically know nothing about how Jesus lived the sexual ethics other than we assume single and celibate).

The sexual ethics, on the other hand - Christians have faithfully read different ethics throughout history. For example, Roman Catholics read the Bible as saying sex is only about procreation, therefore banning condoms, birth control, masterbation, abortions, and same-sex relations. They have a very consistent sexual ethic based on that…
