Episode 397: Virtual Church & Artificial Intelligence with Jason Thacker

Are machines going to take over the world? What happens to our jobs once everything is automated? And if computers can think, learn, and feel, do we need to redefine what it means to be human? Jason Thacker joins Skye for a conversation about his provocative new book, “The Age of A.I.” Also this week, Smurfs congregate in France in defiance of the coronavirus. Creators of “The Bum” allow you to wear celebrity posteriors. And with everyone migrating to streaming worship services during the pandemic, how legitimate is virtual church? Plus, Phil alienates the country of Belgium.

As one who loves a good detective story, when Belgium was brought up, I immediately thought of one of the most famous Belgians: Hercule Poirot. Okay, he's fictional, but he's still famous. Many people saw the movie recently, "Murder on the Orient Express." Josh referenced the 1974 version in Episode 77 of The Movie Proposal, but the most recent one was from 2017.

Also, as a Star Trek fan, I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Data or the latest Star Trek show, "Star Trek: Picard" while talking about AI and the future. The moral dilemmas "Picard" discussed around AI were fascinating... at least to my wife and me.

While the "News of the Butt" is often funny it also makes me feel uncomfortable. I am not sure it is appropriate content for a podcast called "The Holy Post." It seems the time used focusing on "the butt" could be used in a more wholesome and edifying way. Could it turn listeners off and cause them to turn away or stop listening to the podcast altogether? Skye made the point to say this is a good time for Christians to investigate their own fears and see what parts of their heart is rooted in Christ and what parts are not. There is something to be said about The Holy Spirit operating in an imperfect system, virtual church, to bring about real change because The Holy Spirit is stronger that imperfect situations. I thoroughly like that Christian and Skye embody this tension, Christian looks to the good that is currently happening over online church situations while Skye looks forward…

Absolutely appreciated Sky's discussion about David Brook's point on how our nation responded to the Spanish Flu by almost ignoring it and suppressing the horrors of that time. I don't remember learning about the impact of that Flu on America in my history classes.
