714: What’s Driving the Surge of Catholic Converts? plus Gabriel Salguero

Catholic bishops around the U.S. are reporting a dramatic increase in applications for church membership and a surge of new converts as Easter approaches. What’s driving this new interest in the Catholic Church, and why aren’t evangelical churches seeing a similar boom? Mike Erre joins Phil and Kaitlyn to discuss the trend. Gabriel Salguero is back to update Skye on the impact of immigration enforcement on Hispanic churches and communities. He shares about two evangelical pastors detained in ICE facilities, and why Latino voters are abandoning Donald Trump after giving him record support in 2024. Also this week, is sycophantic AI causing us to lose our ability to tolerate real people?

Gabriel Salguero is often the guest invited to "check in on the Latino church". As a Latina this bothers me a little, but I appreciate that he ALWAYS gives the caveat that this can't be the case, and I'm grateful because HPM lacks a Latino voice.

+1 point for trying

What bothers me a LOT is that there was so much discussion about the SBC with their sex scandals in 2019 and with the Assemblies of God going through the same now, there's been no mention of it and I have to wonder if it's because HPM doesn't want to get in hot water for leaning on an AG voice.

-1 point for obscurity

Are y'all at all familiar with the musical The Cotton Patch Gospel? It is basically a creative re-imagining of the story of Jesus if he had lived in 1970s Georgia. Anyways, one of the songs is all about going to Atlanta ("We're goin' to Atlanta for the hoe-down, we goin' to Atlanta don't ya know, we goin' to Atlanta for the bright lights showdown, and sure enough it's gonna be a show!") I think it would make a fantastic theme song for your upcoming show in Atlanta, just saying :)

8M people gathered across the country on March 28th (No Kings 3 day) to stand up for the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Some held signs standing up for immigrants and welcoming the stranger, others extolled paying fair wages and spreading wealth, some championed feeding the hungry. We stood for protecting those who are attacked because of the color of their skin, who they love or how they choose to express themselves. We advocated for our neighbors and our communities.

Eight million people gathered on behalf of values aligned with Jesus's teachings, ones that he sacrificed his life for and Mike and Kaitlyn had other things to do and Phil doesn't like crowds? (There was a big crowd…
