We are deep into campaign season with Christians on all sides becoming increasingly anxious and vocal. Phil talks with Kaitlyn Schiess, author of “The Liturgy of Politics,” about the false narratives shaping the hearts and politics of many Christians.
She identifies these “false gospels” as prosperity, patriotism, security, and supremacy—and they’re far more subtle and powerful than you might think, and they affect both sides of the partisan divide. Also this week, Jerry Falwell Jr. responds to his expulsion from Liberty U. by quoting MLK’s “Free at last...” speech. And Mike Pence quotes the Bible in his RNC speech but replaces “Jesus” with “Old Glory.” Is it the clearest example of Christian Nationalism yet?

Hi Dandr! Yeah, from a conservation POV it's definitely a good thing. It just makes me laugh that we have a "nobody gets to touch our lakes" treaty. It sounds funny. Arizona should respond with "Well then you can't touch our cactuses."
Hey Phil, I just wanted to point out that the Great Lakes Compact that you referenced in your interview with Kaitlyn is really important for the preservation of the Great Lakes ecosystems. Even states that are part of the agreement can't bring water to parts of the state that are outside the Great Lakes watershed (ie Waukesha Proposal in WI) which protects the lakes from being drained by human water use over time. I'm not sure I think that's a good example of the human tendency for self preservation - though the way it's implemented could certainly become that way with an emergency situation like the one you described. Just something worth considering!
Love this podcast - keep doing what…
@aubs and @Joe Harrison - the bell is their "Product Placement" bell. Yes, acknowledging free publicity. They named it Taco the Bell. They've been using it since the beginning; I think if you go all the way back to 2012 and listen to some of the first few episodes you hear them explain it. And every now and then Skye explains it to a guest.
I LOVED the format of this episode. Since you switched formats with the interviews happening separate from the news, I miss the interaction with you all and all reacting to the guest and what the guest has to say. I'd like to hear more of this. And other than time, is there any reason …
@ joe harrison that’s the vibe i was getting too. at first i thought it was any time they mentioned someone’s book but then it was more than just books. i’m curious in what episode they started that.
@aubs - I have been wondering that, too 😆; I started listening to this show two weeks ago, and since then I have been listening to the entire catalog in reverse order (working backwards from the most recent episode). From what I can gather, I THINK it's a little joke Skye's been doing for a while where he rings it whenever they give "free publicity" to some kind of company or creative work, like dinging items on a cash register. That is my theory anyway.
